Hm... 1 reminds me of the Ssi-Ruuk of the Star Wars books. Anyhow, there's an alien race that takes living beings (the people of the planet Bakura--humans) and uses their life force to power their space ships. It might be something worth researching by anyone looking to expand your bunny.

It's called "entechment" (if anyone wants to know more without reading the book, check here: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Entechment ) And the book itself is "Truce at Bakura"
