I've had plotbunnies a lot like that, usually the "mortal" body is Ultra Magnus.

3. Cybertron was reduced to a barren wasteland by the war and the majority of the survivors abandoned it in order to survive. But there are an unlucky few who were left behind, or chose to stay for some reason, and are forced to scavenge from the numerous battlefields to survive.

Maybe those without a mobile altmode were left behind, like Blaster and Soundwave. Or maybe those that were considered too dangerous to take, like triplechangers.

3a. A group of explorers return to Cybertron centuries later and encounter these stragglers.

Who have since created a completely new culture in order to separate themselves even further from those who abandoned them.
