He's a reference to the Skorponok from Headmasters if I recall correctly.

he's a reference to the Headmaster (whether G1 or IDW)....

However that's about the only thing in common. As either Skorponok (headmaster) is quite smart, esp once the human is added, whereas Scorponok is a drone w/ low-level intelligence but high instinct.
