Confessions - Part 16

After leaving Ian’s office, the two men made their way across the carefully tended yard to the rectory. Viggo wanted to reach out and take Orlando’s hand in his, but knew he had to practice discretion, being especially mindful of the kids who were still milling about on the basketball court. Once they were inside, though, he gathered Orlando into his arms, relishing the feel of the other man against him.

“Thank you,” Viggo whispered as he rested his cheek against the head of dark curls. “I couldn’t have done any of this without you.”

Orlando’s arms slid around Viggo’s torso and held on tight. “I said that I would stand beside you, no matter what,” he said quietly. “That’s what partners do, yeah?”

Viggo nodded. “Yes, they do,” he said before tilting Orlando’s face up and brushing his lips against the other man’s slowly. “I love you.”

“I love you, too,” Orlando said with a small smile. “So, ready to celebrate?”

“Almost,” Viggo said as he released the young man and linked their fingers together before leading him into the living room. “There’s something I need to take care of first, if you don’t mind.”

Dark brows furrowed. “What is it?”

“I know we have to be careful and all that, but I wouldn’t feel right staying here now, now that I’ve officially resigned from the church. Would it be okay if I stayed with you tonight?”

Orlando reached up and brushed a few strands of blond hair away from Viggo’s face. “Oh, love, I thought that was a given. Of course you can stay with me. We can start looking for you a place tomorrow. Would you like some help packing?”

Reaching up, Viggo caught Orlando’s hand in his and placed a kiss to his palm. “Thank you for the offer, but would you mind if I did this alone? I need…”

“Hey,” Orlando said softly as he cupped Viggo’s cheek. “No explanations needed. I completely understand.”

“It’s not that I don’t want…”

“Viggo,” Orlando said as he laid his index finger across the man’s lips, silencing what Viggo was about to say. “It’s fine. Take all the time you need. I’m going to go run a few errands while you finish up here, then we can meet back at the apartment, have some dinner and do a little celebrating,” he finished with a smile.

Viggo nodded. “Thank you,” he said as he kissed the pad of Orlando’s index finger. “I’m not sure how long it will take, so how about I call you when I’m done? Just to make sure you’re there before I head over.”

“Sounds good. Now, off you go,” Orlando said as he stepped away from Viggo and made a shooing motion towards the stairs. “The sooner you start packing the sooner you get to the apartment and we can start celebrating.”

“Alright, I’m going,” Viggo said with a chuckle as he headed for the stairs. He had placed his foot on the first riser when he paused. “By any chance, is a stop at CVS on your list of things to do?”

Orlando’s laughter filled the space around the two men. “That’s my first stop. Call me when you’re finished, yeah?”

“Will do,” Viggo answered as he headed towards his bedroom.

A wave of sadness broke over Viggo as he walked into his sparsely furnished bedroom. He had been devoted to the church for his entire adult life, and now he was leaving it all behind, walking away from the one constant that had never failed him in any way, shape or form. He lowered himself to the bed, his gaze falling on one of the many bibles he had collected over the years, sitting on the desk along with a set of his rosary beads. He could only hope that wherever he and Orlando settled, they could find a church that would accept them as a couple. He could never give up his faith completely.

The sound of the back door closing caught Viggo’s attention and he took a deep breath, knowing that he needed to close this chapter of his life. Rising from the bed, he pulled a suitcase and duffle bag from the closet and began to pack.

“I’m surprised to find you here,” Ian said as he stood in the doorway to Viggo’s room. “I figured you would already be at Orlando’s. Speaking of the dear boy, where is he?”

“I asked him to go on without me,” Viggo said as he folded a pair of jeans and tucked them into the duffle bag. “I… this was something I needed to do alone.”

“And he let you?” Ian asked, surprise evident in his voice. “For some reason, I pictured young Orlando pushing you aside and tossing everything into a garbage bag if it would speed the process of you two being together.”

Despite the heavy emotions weighing Viggo down, he had to smile at Ian’s interpretation of Orlando. “We were all out of garbage bags,” he said with a chuckle. “Actually, he’s running a few errands and getting dinner for us. I told him I’d call when I finished up here.”

“Well then, let’s not keep him waiting,” Ian said as he moved to the closet and tucked Viggo’s suits into a hanging garment bag. “Take what you’ll need for a few days, Viggo. The rest can stay here until you need it.”

“I don’t know what I would do without you, Ian,” Viggo said as he zipped the navy blue bag closed. “You have done far more than anyone else would have, and for that we will always be grateful.”

“Yes, I have, haven’t I?” Ian teased, his blue eyes sparkling merrily. “Now, shall we try to put some order to the living room? It was never that cluttered until you moved in.”

Viggo’s heart was lighter when he walked down the stairs a few minutes later. He would get through this. He was starting a new life, one that he would share with a man who loved him deeply, and he loved in return, in a new place where they would not hide that love. It was a bit daunting, not knowing where they would wind up, but knowing that Orlando was by his side made it easier to bear.

The two men lost track of time as they sifted through the vast number of books, Ian setting the ones belonging to Viggo on the couch so Viggo could pack them into boxes. Conversation flowed easily between them, helping to alleviate some of the tension that Viggo had felt earlier. He knew in his heart that he was doing the right thing. Orlando was his future. It was difficult leaving something behind that had been such a large part of his life for so long. Fear of the unknown, Ian had once said, and Viggo understood now what he was referring to.

When all of the books had been packed away, Viggo carried the boxes to the storage area beneath the stairs and stacked them inside.

“Is that it?” Viggo said as he stood and stretched his back, his eyes scanning the room for any more of his things.

“I think so,” Ian said as he closed the door. “If there is something you’ve missed, I’ll be sure to send it with the rest of your things.”

“Thank you again, Ian,” Viggo replied, reaching out to shake his friend’s hand. “I know I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again… I don’t know how we’d get through this without all of your help.”

Ian pulled Viggo into a hug. “I’d normally say that it was nothing, but you’ve been like a son to me. I’m really going to miss you around here.”

Viggo returned the hug, his eyes filling with tears. His throat constricted tightly, closing off any attempt to respond. He melted into the hug, knowing he needed to, but not quite ready to, say goodbye to his friend and mentor.

“It’s going to be okay, Viggo. You’ve chosen a great man.” Ian knew leaving was going to be hard on Viggo, but he knew Viggo’s life was changing for the better. “I’m proud of you. Not everyone has the courage they need to follow what’s in their heart.”

That did it; Viggo’s shoulders shook from the tears that he finally allowed to fall. Ian tightened his grip and whispered words of comfort to Viggo. Tears were a good sign. Ian would have been worried if Viggo hadn’t shown any emotion. He pulled back and handed Viggo his handkerchief.

“I’m a mess.” Viggo laughed at himself while wiping the wetness from his eyes and cheeks. “Wow. This has been a whirlwind twenty-four hours. My life has done a complete one-eighty.”

“Change is good; you know this. Just take each day as it comes. Don’t sweat the little things. Love with all your heart and remember to talk to each other and you’ll be fine. Oh, and remember, my son, I’m only a phone call away.”

“Thank you again for everything, Ian.” Viggo felt so very blessed by having such a wonderful, caring friend like Ian in his corner. “You’ll come and visit us, right?”

“Of course,” Ian replied. “Wherever you two end up, I’ll make sure to come and visit you. Now, don’t you have someone who is waiting on you?”

Picking up his duffle bag full of clothes, Viggo laughed. “Yeah, I need to get going. Orlando is probably wondering if I’ve changed my mind.”

“Somehow, I doubt that,” Ian said as he walked his friend to the back door.

No sooner than he had reached for the doorknob, Viggo’s cell phone chirped, indicating a new text message. He quickly retrieved it from one of the over-sized pockets on his shorts, flipped it open and smiled.

“Well, this is it,” he said before giving Ian a quick wink and took his first step toward his new life.

The moment Orlando left Viggo at the rectory, he started making phone calls.

His first call was to Olive Garden, placing a take-out order he would pick up after running his errands. He’d been craving Italian food for several days now, especially their breadsticks.

After that, he called the hotel where he worked and talked to his manager, Eric, to make arrangements for Viggo to stay there until they decided where they were going to move. He would love to have Viggo stay with him at his apartment, but knew that was out of the question since there were several members of the church who lived in the apartment complex, as well. It was one of the drawbacks of living so close to the church, he thought with a grimace. He wasn’t scheduled to go back to work until the following day and decided that he would wait to talk to Eric about the possibility of transferring to another city, one where he and Viggo were just another couple in the crowd, where Viggo would not be chastised for the decision he had made. Orlando had always gotten along with the friendly Aussie and would miss working for the man.

By the time Orlando had made a quick stop at CVS for supplies and the grocery store to pick up a few things he needed there, it was time to pick up their dinner from Olive Garden. Viggo had not called yet, which didn’t really surprise Orlando. He knew his lover needed this time to himself, to say goodbye to that part of his life.

He pulled into his assigned parking space and cursed the fact that it would take two trips to lug all the bags up to his apartment. Even though his building had an elevator, he hated making the extra trips. He made a mental note to look for something on the ground floor next time.

Before heading up to his apartment, he sent Viggo a quick text message.

Orlando had just finished unloading the groceries and was starting to set out the take away food when he felt Viggo’s arms slip around his waist. Orlando leaned back into the touch, relishing in the feeling of having his lover close to him again.

“Did you get everything?” Orlando turned his chin to place a soft kiss on Viggo’s neck.

“For the most part,” Viggo murmured, lifting a hand to Orlando’s chin and capturing his lips in a succulent kiss. “Missed you.”

“Mmmm, missed you too.” Orlando pulled away and took a breadstick out of the bag, sliding the buttery end across Viggo’s bottom lip. “Here, try one of these.”

Viggo opened his mouth and bit off the end, chewed slowly then licked his lips, savoring the sharp taste of the garlic butter.

Orlando moaned and leaned forward to capture Viggo’s mouth again. For a few moments the kiss flared red-hot as the two men battled for dominance. Orlando gladly backed down, opening his mouth to allow Viggo to deepen the kiss. Christ, he loved it when Viggo kissed him this way… all tongue and teeth and lips and it had Orlando’s mind spinning. He whimpered when Viggo suddenly pulled away. “Wah? Where’re you going?”

Viggo reached for the breadstick in Orlando’s hand and tossed it onto the counter, then pulled the young man out of the kitchen. “It’s been entirely too long since I’ve been inside of you. Please tell me you picked up condoms.”
