12.2.6. If you could travel back in time, would you? Why or why not?
Well, yeah. Obviously. Would never profess to be a damn miracle worker or anythin’ stupid like that, but my best mate is paralysed an’ it happened at a game I was at. If I could go back in time, I’d try an’ stop him hedgin’ into that tackle. I mean, like I said, I ain’t no miracle worker. I wouldn’t try to stop him getting’ pissed off an’ wantin’ to tackle the dude but there had to have been a way to stop the force of the impact. Somethin’… anythin’…
I dunno why I kept watchin’ that video over an’ over again. Kept tellin’ myself there had to have been somthin’ I coulda done to prevent it. It was like if I kept watchin’ it, it would somehow change everythin’ an’ Six wouldn’t be lyin’ broken an’ cripple in a damn hospital bed. It was like I couldn’t believe what had happened or that it wasn’t Six, an’ if I kept watchin’ it, it would somehow sink in that it was true. He really took that hit an’ he really wasn’t gettin’ up after it.
An’ yeah, I dunno why I didn’t go see him either. It wasn’t like there was anythin’ I coulda said that woulda fixed him, was there? If I didn’t think about it, it was almost like I could pretend it hadn’t happened. It wasn’t that I thought about goin’ an’ just didn’t to be an asshole. Truth was, I didn’t think, full stop. It was easier not to think. Then the next thing I know Lyla has her tongue down my throat an’ I ain’t pushin’ her away.
I fucked up. I fucked up in the worst possible way an’ I hurt J after he had already taken the worst fuckin’ knock of his life an’ there ain’t anythin’ I can do to justify it or take it away. So, if I could damn well travel back in time, I would an’ I would change the whole fuckin’ lot. J would have his legs an’ our friendship would still be back as it was when all there was t’life was beer, football, an’ Texas forever.
