A Trip to the Doctor (Fic for sands-in-mexico)

Jan 15, 2011 15:02

Sandra sat in the waiting room at the doctor’s office, fidgeting anxiously. The doctor was running late, and she just needed to know. She’d been feeling sick to her stomach, off and on, for a few weeks, and she just knew something serious was going on. She didn’t get nauseous, not often. And never, ever lasting this long.

Finally, she got called back into an examination room. )

Sheldon was sitting at his desk at the office, still unable to go out into the field which was fine by him. He was getting too old to chase around a bunch of snot nosed rookies and the promotion landed him a nice position though he never liked wearing a suit and tie ( ... )

"The doctor..." Something in him went haywire. He wasn't sure if he had caused something to go wrong or if she had come down with cancer. His eyes widened then narrowed slightly. "Is everything okay?" Anytime anyone went to the doctor, it was to be treated for something or for a check up though her tone really didn't settle things much. "Anything I can do to help?" And yikes, he started jumping to conclusions.

"Lord, oh Lord, oh Lord," she muttered, turning to face him. "I... Sheldon, the doctor, he said..." She paused, drawing a deep breath and forcing herself to spit it out. "Lord, he said I'm pregnant."

The look on his face went from concern to utter shock. His eyes widened and scanned the room as if there was a camera somewhere to tape his reaction.

"Pregnant?" The stony face that he was used to having shattered in that instant to give way to confusion. "Hold that thought," he scratched the back of his head and started looking for that camera from the bookshelf to the kitchen counter.

She watched him in confusion, trying to figure out what in God's name he was doing. "I... we did all the tests, sugar. I'm honest to God pregnant." She wrapped her arms around herself, shuddering slightly. He was going to leave, she just knew it. She'd have to do this all on her own.

Her reaction and the shaking of her tone caused him to stop looking and give pause to his actions. His voice drops to a whisper. "Oh my Christ....this is serious. And....what did he say about...um...."

Sheldon stopped in mid sentence. His mind ceased. His previous thoughts seemed to take on a surreality that he wasn't prepared for. Then he recalled the days where they made love and sighed in relief. "Did he say when your next appointment would be?" Then a pause as he walked across the room to take Sandra's hands. "I wanna be there."

She flung herself into his arms, clinging to him. Oh, Lord, he wasn't leaving. She buried her face in his shirt, too relieved to describe in words. "I... he wants ta see me next month, hon," she murmured. "He said... he said he wants to keep a close watch on me, cuz... cuz it's a bit risky, at my age."

It took all that he had to keep from losing his mind. He always wanted some stability but the whole of the situation was slowly taking its gravitational hold on him and he needed the comfort as much as she did and he knew it.

"Well, I'm not entirely young myself. I just look it. This certainly means a whole new change for the both of us and the risks...are you sure you want to go through with it? I'll do what I can to support you, you know I will....I hope." He chuckled sheepishly.

"Ain't nothin' in this world that'd make me willin'ly give up this child," she said firmly. "I... I ain't never... Both the kids're adopted," she murmured. "I never thought I'd get ta... actually have a baby."

"Okay. I'll help since this is my responsibility too. I was going to tell you over dinner but I guess now's a good time as any. I decided....I'm going to take the trainer's job. This means that I'll still be traveling but not as much. And it also means relocation in a two year rotation. It's better than what I was getting and the pay isn't half bad. This means that I'll be locked stateside and traveling between here, DC and Langley." He stops when he finally processed that this is not only her first biological child but his as well.

"Or...what we can do...well...something I'll have to do is make a conscious decision to do this right." He wasn't about to let her do this completely alone and now that all cards were on the table, he had to decide before too much time passes.

"You'd be wonderful at trainin'," she said, smiling as she reached out to touch his cheek. "I'm sure you got lots ta teach." The relocation didn't bother her; it wasn't like she actually liked California.

That last bit made her pause. "You ain't pressured ta do anythin', hon," she whispered. "I was ready ta do this alone..."

Sheldon's hand reached up to tough the hand on his cheek. A smile came to him and his thoughts were finally settling down. "Well, I do and it's not like I'm not used to moving around but....we made a choice and acted on it and now it's up to us to do this right. I mean we don't have to right this second...you know...give it a couple of weeks to let this all soak in and we'll go from there."

She smiled tenderly, then kissed him softly. "That's good enough for me, sugar."

Returning the kiss, he breaks away and holds her hand. "Okay. Then we'll figure things out as we go along. I'll start by picking up the things that we're going to need and obviously we're going to need a lot of diapers. Newborns go through a lot...if I remember this right."

Sandra laughed. "Lord, yes. Don't worry, hon, I know what to do after the actual birth part. That ain't new." Her hand fell to her stomach, and an amazed smile crossed her face.

His eyes, watched her hand and he moved to sit next to her with his hand on top of hers with a smile. "Whatever happens, we're in this together."

His expression was still in mild shock from so much happening all at once, to him it seemed ironic that he was desked shortly before hearing this news. "I'm still trying to process it. It's kinda surreal and very involved now. I hope to god he or she doesn't come out as ugly as me." He chuckles softly.
