I vote for your last idea as being the most practical and not even that unlikely. But not necessarily just solar. There are other power sources too (wind, etc) that are not that expensive and not as messy as nuclear power. If people spent a fraction as much research on this as we do on nuclear power, it wouldn't be that hard to lower the cost.

I would tend to agree. Solar, wind, geothermal, biofuels, tidal, etc. etc.

It may take a lot of research time and money to get to the point where one or more of these is obviously cheaper and better than nuclear power plants, but it's worth the investment.
