[From one of Indy's innumerable blushing female students in the front row comes a timid question.]
Um, if you don't mind me saying so, professor, weren't there ancient civilizations even more magically advanced then ours? S-stories like the Hourai Elixir or Valois or the kirin come from somewhere, right?
[Indy writes something on the board - a basic seal]
While I will say there are lost magical rituals and artifacts - I would be hard-pressed to assume they are more advanced by default. As for the legends of that we know of, we so far have no evidence that they actually exist.
It's a nice idea to believe potions of immortality, or chimeras that grant wishes exist, but you have to examine the details and ask questions. As for how they came about, it's as simple as misidentifying an animal, or just a persistent hopeful wish, or even a con man telling a very good story.
While possible, it is unlikely. In a field like this, you have to be prepared to expect disappointment when reality doesn't match up with legend. But there are many extraordinary things to learn that does not have to be in the realm of the fantastic.

Heh, you got a good grasp on the situation. What are you doing snooping around in here?
And more importantly, what do you really think you can do with that?
