“Daddy?” Ryuu’s cracking voice called out. “Dad?”
“Yes, sweetie, what is it?”
“I had the most wonderful dream.” The little boy started out really slowly. “I was selected to be in the All Japan Baseball Children’s team and you were proud of me... I played with all my might...”
Kame’s tears fell as he softly stroked Ryuu’s cheek. “And then?”
“Of course we won.” Ryuu’s attempt to giggle only brought him coughing hacks.
“Kiddo, it’s okay. Rest for now and then we’ll make your dream come true when you’re well enough to practice baseball with me, okay?”
Ryuu nodded but something caught his attention and turned to his left. Kame followed the young boy’s gaze, seeing nothing out of the ordinary.
Ryuu nodded and smiled. “Dad, it’s mommy... mom’s here with us.” He paused and listened to the unseen visitor. “She says... thank you for always taking care of us...” Ryuu reached his right hand up before he turned to Kame with a soft smile. “Dad, I love you.”
Kame carefully swatted Ryuu’s hand down. “Listen sweetie, you’re not supposed to go with your mom. Not now, okay? Your place is with me here, with your twin Hayato. You cannot go, okay?”
It was too late for Kame to realize that Ryuu was no longer breathing.
