Two years later, Jin is back but things were different with Jimusho… and even bigger changes in Kame’s life…

Chapter Eighteen

Kame’s phone rang. He spared a look at the screen before gesturing for Jin to take it. “It’s for you.”

Jin took the device and smiled a little as his thanks. “Excuse me.”

As Jin was leaving the room, he heard Hayato ask his adoptive father. “Who’s calling, dad?”

“It’s your Uncle Toma.”

“Are they coming to visit?” Ryuu was a little excited at the news.

Jin was already too far to hear his friend’s reply. He sighed from the frustration building inside of him and answered the phone. “Hey, where are you?” he inquired at the caller.

Toma’s cracking reply hurt Jin’s ears. “We’re here already, what room are you guys in?”

“Don’t you think Kame wouldn’t be too pleased if--” Jin started but Toma cut him off.

“Don’t give me that crap, Akanishi.” Toma was pissed and his no nonsense tone showed that. “Kame’s and idiot and we’re going up. What room?”

Jin found himself sighing. “Fine.” He gave the room number to the irritated man.

“Meet us in the elevator.” Toma hung up.

Jin scratched his head in annoyance but did just as asked.

When the elevator door dinged open, Jin wasn’t expecting the people that Yamapi and Toma somehow managed to drag with them.

T-TUN.

Jin felt the urge to run but fought it. Instead, he stayed rooted in his place.

“Aren’t you going to say ‘Hi!’ to us?” Ueda asked with his left eyebrow raised.

Jin wasn’t able to muster anything except for a small nod of greeting.

Yamapi went and stood beside Jin to whisper an explanation. “We met them on the parking lot and Toma informed them of Kame’s circumstance.”

“Oh.”

“Don’t worry, they wont hurt you about the past.” Yamapi assured. He cocked his head to everyone. “Let’s go? We have one stupid and insensitive turtle to deal with.”

Jin led the way back to the hospital suite. As soon as they arrived in front of the room, Koki and Toma immediately opened the door and brusquely stormed inside.

“You... idiot!” Both men looked ready to kill Kame.

“Uncle Toma, Uncle Koki!” Ryuu and Hayato clapped their hands in delight.

It was clear that the twins were overjoyed with their guests.

“And everyone from KAT-TUN~!” Ryuu added.

“Oi, what about me?” Yamapi asked with a look of mock-hurt in his features.

“And of course, the greatest uncle ever~!” Hayato bellowed carelessly, trying to appease the older man. “Uncle Pi!”

Yamapi kon-kon’d at the kid.

Maru grumbled. “I thought I’m your greatest uncle?”

“No! Hayato clearly said that I’m their greatest uncle!” Junno said, turning to Hayato with a pout.

“So who is the greatest one, really?” Ueda stepped forward to stand next to Ryuu’s bed. “Because this little boy here told me that I’m the greatest.” He said with a smile as he ruffled the little boy’s hair.

“No! I am!” both Koki and Toma shouted.

Hayato and Ryuu looked trapped while Kame and Jin were amused at the sudden turn of events.

“So there will be no fights,” A laughing voice from the doorway said. “Let’s vote me as the greatest uncle.”

Everyone turned to the direction of the voice and saw the newly arrived Shouhei who good naturedly v-signed at them. Groans were heard, even coming from the twins themselves.

“A~re?” Shouhei face palmed. “But you said--” he started appealing his case to the twins but unfortunately, Taichi cut his tirade.

“You? The greatest?” Taichi snorted as he made his way next to where Kame was standing. “What a crazy notion.”

Kame shook his head and decided to interfere. “People, please remember the fact that this is a hospital. So please keep your voices down.”

That seemed to make everyone remember the fact that Kame hid this from their knowledge. It was unfair that Taichi and Shouhei were informed when they weren’t.

“Kame,” Toma started. “Why didn’t you tell us?”

“Tell you what?” Kame’s features hardened before he was able to change it into a poker face.

“This!” Koki’s voice raised in tone.

Kame inhaled deeply.

Shouhei and Taichi, with a brief peace offering between them, gestured to each other to try and help Kame out.

It was something that didn’t escape Jin’s observation.

Taichi cleared his throat but Ryuu beat him into it.

“It’s probably our fault. Dad was only worried about me and Hayato so it escaped his mind to call you.”

The adults looked surprised at the boy.

“Dad, would you please fill them in about it?” Ryuu then turned to his older twin. “And Hayato too? I don’t want anyone to be in the dark about my... condition.”

“Honey, they don’t-- you just...” Kame was at a loss. He didn’t know what to say.

Hayato suddenly looked serious. “No. I don’t want to hear it.” His Uncle Jin hinted earlier that Ryuu was sick... that it was probably the same illness that took their mother away from them... but... he wasn’t ready yet.

He didn’t want to hear how serious his twin’s condition was. Not like this.

“Hayato-chan?” Jin voiced out, looking worried. Maybe it was too much of him to ask the young boy to promise him not to leak emotions. After all, he’s just a child.

Hayato turned to look at Jin. His eyes were full of unshed tears.

“Um...” Hayato’s voice cracked. He tried so hard not to break down in front of his twin. The best solution for now is to run out of the room. Hopefully Ryuu wouldn’t be able to pick up anything from him. “Excuse me. I’ve got to go... pee.” He immediately left the room, not waiting for anyone to say their approval.

Or to point out that they had a perfectly usable lavatory inside the suite.

“Hayato!” Series of shouts coming from everyone ensued but the young boy didn’t pay heed to their calls.

Ryuu called out. “Baka-niichan!”

“Taichi!” Kame panicked as he turned to his friend. He was torn between following his older adopted son and staying with the younger.

Jin, seeing Kame’s hesitation and distress, offered to go. “It’s probably best if I go after him.”

T-TUN, Kame, Toma, Pi and Shouhei threw him a look of shock.

“He pinky-promised something with me so...” Jin scratched his head, unable to continue his thoughts.

“Please Uncle Jin.” Ryuu’s seemingly small voice called out, pleading. “He’s probably at the--”

“The rooftop.” Jin smiled, nodding and then smiling at Ryuu seeing the startled look on the young boy. “He told me in a passing about... rooftops.” He pocketed his hands and gestured with his head. “I better go.”

Silence reigned on the room when Jin left. Then a moment later, Toma grumbled to Koki. “Great. I think Bakanishi now would be crowned the greatest uncle ever.” He pouted.

That brought smiles to everyone’s face, including Kame.

“But you’re still not off the hook, mister!” Koki waved his right index finger at Kame.

“Er... I’m sorry?” the youngest member of KAT-TUN socked everyone with his award winning kicked-puppy look.

“Crazy people! I’m surrounded by crazy people!” Ryuu muttered out loud but with a smile on his face. “Daddy, go and follow Hayato and Uncle Jin. I’ll be fine here.” He gave everyone a smile. “After all, I have the greatest Papa and uncles in the whole wide world in the room with me.”

“But I don’t want to--”

“Please dad? At the moment, I’m fine.” Ryuu held his slightly aching chest. “But my big brother isn’t. I know he’s hurting but I can’t pick any emotions from him except this slight twinge in my heart. You have to be there with Uncle Jin to try and calm him down.”

“Go.” Taichi seconded. “We’ll be fine here.”

Kame gave Ryuu a peck on the forehead before rushing out to find Hayato and Jin.

-----
Jin rushed across flights of stairs to get to the rooftop. He was thankful that Hayato opened up easily to him, telling him a little about his life before and after they met Kame...

So maybe, just maybe.... he would be able to help Kame out... even just as little as this. By taking care of Hayato.

When he reached the rooftop, he was awed at what he saw. There was a little garden adorning it. Then he saw Hayato picking up some pebbles and hitting something with it.

“Hayato?” Jin called out as he approached the boy.

Hayato guiltily released the pebble on his hold. Jin frowned when he saw a little kitty across Hayato. The cat was meowing pitifully. The older man saw pebbles around the cat. He turned to Hayato with a questioning gaze.

Hayato averted his gaze. “I-- I wasn’t hitting it with pebbles. I was just--”

Jin took the little boy in his arms. “Upset? Scared?” He supplied.

Hayato nodded. “I’m sorry uncle... I failed to do what you asked of me.”

Jin shook his head, smiling at the boy comfortingly. “It’s okay to be scared and upset. It’s only normal.” His gaze suddenly turned into a disappointed one. “But it doesn’t mean that you can take it out with this little guy here.”

Hayato’s lips quivered and his eyes moistened. “I’m sorry.” He cried openly now. “I’m just-- I can’t do it, Uncle Jin. I’m sensing Ryuu’s feelings and... I don’t know what I’ll do if... if I lose him too. When it hit me that Ryuu’s condition maybe THAT serious, I had to run away. I didn’t want him to see such a wimpy brother.”

Jin made it so that his’ and Hayato’s foreheads touched against each other; their gazes were interlocked. “You are not a wimpy brother! Ryuu will never think of you as that. You’re a brave, dependable and compassionate brother and Ryuu needs you more than ever now.”

“But--”

“Shhh...” Jin gently rocked the little boy on his arms. “Do you think Ryuu will leave you if he had the chance?” Hayato didn’t answer. “No, he wouldn’t. That I’m sure of.”

“But that’s exactly what my mom said but she still... left us.”

“Oh, sweetheart. Your mom’s circumstance and Ryuu’s is different. True, I don’t know what happened to your mom... but your dad, he promised your mom to take care of you. So he’ll do his best to keep it at that -- for both of you to be safe and well taken care of.”

Jin didn’t really know that but he had a feeling that’s exactly what Kame promised Rikka. One doesn’t need to be a genius to guess that. That’s just the man Kame is.

“I know he will do his best... I have no doubts about it. It’s just that... I feel like I can’t talk this out with dad. He’s hurting badly too.”

“That’s why I’m here, kiddo. If you can’t talk to Ryuu or your dad, you can always come to me, you know?”

“Is... that okay?”

“Of course.” Jin smiled. Before he caught himself, he already gave a light kiss on Hayato’s forehead.

Hayato smiled back. “Thanks Uncle Jin. You’re the greatest!”

“Ha~!” Jin maneuvered Hayato on his left arm so that he can raise his right arm to v-sign at the boy. “Just wait until I tell that to everyone!” He grinned teasingly and victoriously at Hayato.

Hayato pouted. “Mou~ don’t! They’ll just pester me about it.” He gestured for Jin to come closer and Jin did. Hayato whispered conspiratorially. “It’s our secret, okay?”

Jin beamed. “As you wish, little master. But only if you get Ryuu to admit that I’m the greatest too~!”

“Okay.” Hayato agreed.

Hiding behind the door leading out the rooftop, Kame smiled.
