Yeah, I have to admit bailing on Season 3 when Starbuck (my least favourite char) returned from the dead. I had no interest in any of the chars, was sick of the pretenious mystic bullshit, and the general dreariness.
I walked right into that.:-) The problems of relying too much on your spellchecker.
I was thinking back on how much I loved '33' when watching this and I think they could have trimmed everything from New Caprica onwards down to say around ten episodes and that would have helped the pacing. I was ambivalent on Starbuck but tolerated her. I think they mistook dreary for grim. The 2nd half of season 4 consists entirely of them sitting around and doing nothing whilst angstying over it. I liked the two mutiny episodes but every other episode could have been cut.
I thought early Starbuck had a good combination, but after season two....
Faith fucked up grew, fucked up again and still got up to try. Buck stopped. It was just endless gloom, drinking and destroying.
My thoughts on plot and character development has always been show me on screen what you want me to know and see, not in print in some mag, not from the actors, not in off screenvile and if you as the writer has to come to further explain , or justify then you have not done your job. Don't lead on me on this goose chase and at the end tell me you are leaving it up to my imagination what happens because that ending is the new "In".
I thought the BSG finale made Never Fade Away look like a well thought out and executed episode.
I won't lie. Starbuck was my favorite. I detested what they did to her ALL season. Detested what the did to Starbuck and Apollo. But hated even more the ending given to Baltar, while Adam abandoned his son to whie over Laura's grave.
Yipee Helo, Hera and Athena survived....and????
Nothing was answered, nothing was in character, nothing was honest in the how it was portrayed.
Yes, I wasn't enamoured over Adama's ending but that was because after S2 it all became about the Adama/Roslin ship.
I liked the slightly more upbeat ending more than I was expecting but this and the aftershow that they did just make it all up as they were going along.

For me she was Faith without the inner vulnerabilty or growth. Grow the fuck up already.
"I think they mistook dreary for grim."
Possibly. To be honest, they relied far too much on dream sequences and religious psycho-babble, and not enough on actual characterisation and plot.
