This is great. I especially, especially loved the opening bit with Jayne realizing Mal was the one for him but only after he realized he'd lost Mal to River. There's something horrible and poignant about that. And Jayne stays because, hey, even if he's lost Mal, he wants to stay around the only person he's ever found who could accept him for him, etc.

The rest of the Mal/River stuff was good too. I liked them talking in the cockpit. The OoG scene sort of confused me though, but that's just largely because I don't see Mal/River prior to the movie. Still, great job. Have you ever written any other Mal/Jayne?

No, this is it. I'm supposed to be writing Mal/Jayne with dessert_first but I've, uh, let my tag slide.

I saw Mal/River almost from the first, actually. But that's me!

Well get cracking! (Please!) I'd love to read more Mal/Jayne from you! It's a rare pairing and one of my favorites. :) And you seem to have a good handle on both of them.

I guess I can SEE the appeal of Mal/River pre-movie but I can't see it being phyiscal then. Or him even realizing it for what it is. But after the movie, definitely. :)

Beautiful voices. The few words Mal speaks, the endless sensory perceptions of him through River. Her essential unknowability -- and yet how much more do any of them know about each other? Mal can't let himself be seduced by someone who doesn't understand. Does anyone understand?

No, not all the way, to your last question. But River's knowledge and innocence, the forbidden nature of his attraction to her----it's irresistible to Mal, to me. She's Serenity to him, she stands for all the victims of the Alliance.
Or so I think!

That's one of the best portrayals of River I've ever read; and pretty good characterization of Mal and the rest, too.
