Strange Companion behavior?

I have Brelyna Maryon as a comapanion. She's a kick ass mage who often fries the enemy before I can get a shot or swing in. She is also an accomplished sneak who works well with my character ( Read more... )

Oh, yes! I mean, intellectually I knew I wasn't the only one to have a similar (and I hate to call it this) issue but I seriously felt like I had to be the only one to have one of their companions act ten kinds of odd ( ... )

It must be a glitch. Like with Brelyna. She even has lines for the Forsworn and never hesitates to attack them. She usually fries their archers off the walls. But she turned and ran away from this lone Forsworn patrol who didn't even see us. It's so out of character for her.

I really hope they fix this one. She is RP wise the best spouse for my character and I don't see getting another companion for this particular character. Usually they work together so well!

Aye, I know what you mean. Though I play on the Xbox so I'm unsure if it's a cross-platform glitch that was encoded wonky or if it's just something completely random and linked to their pathing. *le shrug*

And I really should have started out with something more along the lines of RP conscious when I started out, but I was blinded by the shiny, beautiful landscape and story and didn't really get into the 'RP mindset' until I was well into my 20s; by that time my follower deaths numbered 3 due to ineptitude on their part (or programming idiocy because when your companion decides to just throw themselves in front of your swings it can't be anything else...besides an ingrained death wish which is amazing to explore from an RP standpoint).

Though, I did end up marrying my latest companion and my Redguard couldn't be happier even if she thinks her husband is horribly optimistic and upbeat. (Vorstag is very chipper and kind for a mercenary.)

I'm on xbox, too. Could be one of xbox's many variable glitches.

I think it's really better to explore and get the feel for the game at first, anyways. I just fell into playing this dark elf, being so fresh from playing Morrowind and my favorite Telvanni Dunmer. Dark Elves tend to be my favorite, although I did play a Khajiit warrior in Oblivion that was both a heavy tank and DPS. That cat was tough and I had to scale up the difficulty to have meaningful play with him.

Yeah, no matter what style I'll play, I am going to stick with companions who excell at ranged attacks, be it spell or bow. As I learned from Dragon Age to not even equip the mages and archers with melee weapons, I do the same here. Keep them out of my way. My kid has Darkeethus, an archer sneak, and he works out well, and he doesn't run away. I don't like close quarter combat with companions, something I learned from Oblivion and its annoying "escort this person and keep them alive" quests.

Companions are so strange. Between the mages being unable to level up spells properly and then Onmund switching outfits between every single skirmish in a cave, I've just decided that they're just quirky people.

Have you had a problem with Brelyna zapping enemies before they show up on your compass as hostiles? I won't even know someone's there, and then it's Chain Lightning and battle cries all over the place and me wheeling around to see what in the hell he's going after now.

Well, they are mages, lol!

Oh, Akatosh, yes. She'll zap a spriggan or a Forsworn archer before I know they are there. But so far it's worked out well. It is kind of tricky working with her at times, as she will summon a Flame Atronach most times, and it's kinda hard to sneak with that. But it's just a matter of waiting a short time for it to fizzle out before sneaking onwards. Overall I'm really happy with her.

A couple of times she's gotten into fights with her own conjured critters because one of them will accidetally hit her in combat. Fortunately that happens after the battle. It's funny to watch, and I can see my character shaking his head, lol!

Sometimes my character is quicker on the draw and will have three or four enemies down with the bow before she can react, so it balances out.

I'm really hoping that, along with the tremendous list of bugs they have, they will fix the mage spell problem, and this running away thing. Brelyna would be totally awesome if she could cast the spells she's able to at this level.

Aww Brelyna! I just found her because I wasn't interested in magic because I AM NOT A MAGE but once I got going on the Gaulder amulet, the only way to get into Saarthal is on the mage questline (apparently?) and that whole questline became rather PANTS ON FIRE rather quickly.

(Which totally ruined my minor NPC 'ship of Brelyna/Ancano, DAMMIT! *shakes fist*)

So I found Brelyna after I'd already seriously bonded with Lydia, Aela, and Farkas, companion-wise.

I've done only Saarthal and a few minor quests for the mage's college.

Brelyna is awesome. When they were waiting for the wedding to be prepared, she and my character took a walk outside the city gates, in time for a dragon to show up. Brelyna was so good at fighting that dragon my character knew he was in love ;p

Ancano? Hmmm, interesting.

"N'wah! You are not worthy of gazing upon a Telvanni lady, you Thalmor s'wit!" So says my dark elf, lol!

Ancano unrequited love would be great fic!

Well and after I've had some time to think about it, I really think Ancano's appointment to the college was a punishment and his thing which you probably haven't gotten to was a bit of a trope. Or maybe I was already thinking it and a comment he made merely reinforced it.

But the idea that he was miserable because he was underappreciated (and being Thalmor seems to come with a GIANT EGO BACKPACK) and having this kind of antagonistic relationship with Brelyna because she is so focused on the skill instead of the politics, rather his opposite, but something maybe he also once aspired to before he became so jaded. I don't know, her little comments, and his, I just happened to get them back to back when I first walked into the College, and they just...clicked for me.

Lol!

That makes sense.

When I first met her, my character was practically pulling his hair out after having to fight his first blood dragon and some thugs hired by . He was dumping excess armor on the floor of his little assigned room. She walks in, asking if he was getting rid if it. He snaps at her first, then, hey, wait, I'm sorry, then goes through her spell experiments with a sense of humor.

But, this is wide open Elder Scrolls. Nobody's going to dictate canon to you:)

Besides, it's good that Brelyna is popular because many PC mods will be made for her.
