Hahaha. I've attempted to follow Farkas a few times, and other followers. They seem to take their own time though. Article was hilarious :D

Do they immediately head home?

Stenvar apparently doesn't. One time I dismissed him from Fort Dawnguard so that I can get Serana to follow me. He left, and then after some dialogue, I decided to fast travel to Riften and stay the night there. To my surprise, I ran into him just before entering the Bee and Barb.

I've forgotten his dialogue, but it made me really feel warm and fuzzy, I took him along with me to Castle Volkihar anyway.
