Thanks tons to
erinm_4600 for being my first beta and a great encouragement to me.
This part was inspired by the much-loved photo of Jack found at Gateworld.net in the description of the episode “Avalon.”
http://www.gateworld.net/sg1/s9/images/901_02.jpg.shtml . I know it's actually supposed to be at Cam's hospital, but I want it to be the Pentagon, so in my story, it is.

An honest man accepts that even the best things can’t go on forever. Of course, there’s nothing saying that you can’t move from one good thing to another good thing…
Jack O’Neill, philosopher? Go figure.

He stood at the window, pensively leaning against the sill and contemplating the scene beyond. The Jefferson Memorial, the Washington Monument and, in the distance, the unmistakable dome of the Capitol. Jack was waiting in an office on the fourth floor of the E-ring of the Pentagon, for the arrival of General Hammond and the Joint Chiefs. President Hayes would be joining them via video-conference.
“What am I doing here?” He sighed aloud. Wearing his dress blue uniform didn’t help him feel any more like he fit in than if he was just wearing his old green BDU’s. And he doubted that the extra set of stars he was about to receive would make any difference either.
Admittedly, he was deeply honored to be here. He never dreamed he would make it this far. And what good military man and patriot wouldn’t want to be in his position? Major General? Head of Homeworld Security? But frankly, he wondered if this job should go to someone who was a little less pessimistic about people and politics and life in general.
As a low ranking lieutenant, he had been taught God and Country, all the way. But patriotism hadn’t been first on his list of reasons to make a career in military.
When he signed up for Special Forces training, it turned out he was pretty good at it. In fact, he found it to be kind of a rush. The thrill of putting it all on the line, of beating the odds - that was what made the military the place for Jack O’Neill to be. Then, as a team leader, he had a knack for recognizing the strengths and weaknesses of the airmen under his command and using that intuition to build a successful team.
He also liked it because of the order it brought to his life-a certain amount of predictability. No matter how chaotic the job could be sometimes. The Air Force was the one thing he could be certain of in his life.
But, there was a time when between Iraq and Charlie and then Sara, his life had spiraled out of control. In that dark time, he had left the military and found himself in a suicidal stupor…but when he came back to active duty, the order began to come back as well. The chain of command was the foundation for this order, though. And because he needed it to survive, he would never abuse it. There was only one temptation. But he had been careful.
In taking this job, in leaving the SGC, he’d still have the military. He’d still be, in some capacity, involved in the work he cared about so much. And that one temptation? She would no longer be ‘off limits.’
It was a calculated risk, though. He knew the feelings were there. But was she ready to follow through? He could think of a hundred reasons she might still reject him. But, in taking this job, he was about to lay it all on the line and whatever happened, at least there wouldn’t be the wondering, the wishing, or the hoping anymore. And if she did reject him, at least he wouldn’t have to see her everyday.

He took it as a good sign that he finally convinced Sam to go fishing with him. Well, with the team, anyway.

Despite any secondary designs he may have had toward Carter’s affections, his invitation to the three of them insisted this would be a farewell party. The group of four that had been known as the original SG-1 was changing - three of them embarking on separate adventures. They would stay in touch, sure, thanks to subspace, hyperspace, wormholes, and …telephones. But things would never be the same.
Daniel would board Daedalus, finally off to his treasured city that he had such a large part in discovering, but had never visited. In fact, he planned to stay on Atlantis for the long term, making Earth his vacation spot, instead of vice versa.
Teal’c would also come and go, but more often. Jack knew things were not going well politically with the Free Jaffa. Teal’c had assured them all that trips to Earth would be a respite and would occur as frequently as possible.
Without them, Sam had decided to take a break from going off-world to do some of the research she had been dying to get to at Area 51 and to spend some time with Cassie who was attending the university nearby. She left the option open return to the SGC eventually, but freely admitted that with the death of her father and the breaking of her engagement, a change of scenery was in order.
But for Jack's own future, nothing much had been said. And no one thought too much about it. He had only recently been promoted to General and commander of the SGC. He had stopped going off world and life had became fairly mundane since the Goa’uld and Replicators had been ‘dealt with.’ And just as General Hammond had been there for many years, it was just assumed that for Jack, nothing much would change.
When they got to the cabin, he would tell them about his move to D.C.
