Weakly discussion Part 1

Jan 27, 2009 18:30

I stood at the train station and waited for my train to arrive as I read a quote on a screen:

"Politeness is the simplest form of contempt."

What do you think about this quote? I was wondering how a person can come up with something like that.

That's easy. The simplest answer I can think of is wishing a stranger happy birthday if you don't know who they are or barely know who they are. How can you genuinely wish them happiness when there's no personal investment behind the statement? It's a trope given as good manners requires, not because it's genuine which is why I would say that politeness is the simplest form of contempt.

That is a rather good example. The most people who are saying happy birthday don´t know you.

You can´t even say that you are doing it out of respect because how can you really respect somebody wholeheartedly if you don´t know that person?

Bslderdash! Politeness is the grease that helps society refrain from killing each other.

XD Yeah, that is right. Without politeness the tone between humans might be a lot rougher.
