2011 writing & reading

Dec 31, 2011 17:01

Below is the list of things I have updated/written and things I have read for 2011! Though the list of things I have read is wholly inaccurate, because I didn't include re-reads, non-published original fiction (except the book of my friend's that I am betaing) or fanfiction, so it looks like I read way less than I did. Next year I should add all ( Read more... )

Thanks, you too! And hey - do you want to be added to my friends list? Because you weren't before I semi-locked everything and I wasn't sure if you wanted to be, and you've had me added for a pretty long time.

I positively love Josh's books and Shying Away was also a high scorer for me. Seriously awesome story.

I read Shying Away after a rec on TSP; I think it was yours. Kate Sherwood's pretty good all around, really.

Ohhh Sabriel. I love that series, haven't read it in forever. Right now I'm rereading for the umpteenth time the series my tattoo came from, then the Dark Tower, but THEN--then I might reread some Abhorsen. If cats were really like Mogget, I'm sure I would have some.

And look how productive you were this year, holy shit.

(Next year definitely include the unpublished/fanfiction stuff. I mean, my reading list for this past year includes everything on your "written" list, which I think counts in terms of quality.)

I somehow never managed to read it around the time everyone else was, and I found the first book at a bookmobile (FREE!) and snatched it up. I'm enjoying it, though I can see where it's certainly aimed for younger readers and that reading it for the first time at 25 is probably not going to endear it to me the same way it would be to someone who grew up with it ( ... )

Yeah, it can be hard when you just are introduced to something that everyone else has ALWAYS LOVED. That's how I feel about Narnia, actually, because I didn't really read them until two years ago. My experience with them was tainted, of course, because adults can recognize religious allegory where children can't.

I don't know that the series itself has a name, but the first book is A Madness of Angels, or: The Resurrection of Matthew Swift. It's been compared to Neverwhere, but I honestly think that in this, Neil Gaiman is completely outclassed. These books are my faaaaavorites. I mean, clearly, because I have a tattoo because of them, but seriously. So much love. I've never met anyone else who has read them either, they're fairly new.

In some ways I love the Harry Potter fandom, but man, there is a lot of really terrible fanfic. One of the curses of having a readership of HUGE age range and diversity, I guess. I can (almost) never bear to read things unless they're complete, because it just breaks my heart to see stories abandoned

Yeah, oh man, if I read Narnia now I'd be like JESUS CHRIST LITERALLY and probably just quit the thing. Especially now that I've read some of C.S. Lewis's religious essays. Even when I reread the books I realize they're actually not even written that terribly well. But the stories themselves are definitely childhood staples for me.

Now that I have a kindle and a huge amazon gift certificate I want to read ALL THE THINGS, especially recc'd things, so I am going to add that as well! I already have like six books bought for it; ugh man why do I doooo.

There is some really bad HP fanfic out there but after being a lurker there for so long (like ten years) I've narrowed it down to the good authors and the authors to avoid and the good communities and fests to watch and only rarely do I backclick on HP fanfiction anymore. In the H/D holidays fest that just went on there was a million plus words of fic and I have READ ALL OF IT, jeez what is my life.

That is an impressive list.

I read one or two Sherlock stories in high school and I figured with all the current hype and several adaptations, I should really read all of it! :)
