I so agree with you on this book. I was so looking forward to it and when I finally read it I was disappointed. And again like you it wasn't that I hated it, but I just had high expectations for it. So while I also agree that it is average I actually felt like it was below because I had hyped it up in my head. I have a bad habit of doing that with both books and movies if I hear a lot of good things about them. So when I read or watch them I get disappointed when they don't live up to my expectations.
Also on a side note I like how you rate the treatment of women in your reviews. I always hate how women are either non-existent in gay stories and movies or their treated very poorly. Of course that isn't always the case [cough Rhysa cough]. I can think of a few books and movies that portray women in a good light, but only a few.
I read this book when it first came out so the details are a fuzzy for me. I'll just go on how I remember feeling when I read this book, because I remember that really well. Hopefully I can do that without being overly dramatic

This is exactly why I don't read much YA - I'm not reading it from a point of view that's meant to relate to the book or the characters. I have no doubt that this book would really appeal to teenagers of the same age who feel different, outcast, or are questioning their sexuality, regardless of the quality of it. YA is really more about creating relatable feelings and scenarios than making a coherent and logical story, which is why I'm not fond of the genre and probably why the quality of it has been slipping wildly - it doesn't matter how good the story is, it only matters that it strikes a chord. Hero obviously strikes a chord with people, and there's no way I can argue against somebody's feelings and sense of contentment over a book. Even if that book is not very good. I have no doubt Moore really enjoyed writing this book - it reads like it, because it reads like a thing that he was enjoying so much that he didn't take the time to build a world or a logical scenario around it; it's all about the characters and the scenarios
