doris gets her oats

I have now stripped my iPod of its usual suspects, and now it contains about 90% Beatles (and George Harrison's All Things Must Pass), gently sprinkled with scattered tracks by Syd Barrett, Graham Coxon, the Beta Band, and the anomaly "Hey Saturday Sun", the most magically delicious track from the most recent Boards of Canada LP ( Read more... )

How weird. I just discovered the Beta Band about a month and some change ago, and I wound up making a ringtone from one of their ditties. They have that lovely hard bop funk that you know must be just *sick* live.

I think a lot more people know and dig the Beatles than you give credit for. They aren't as relevent, of course, since they've been defunct for, what, thirty years? But you listen to their music and it's still wonderful, wonderful, wonderful stuff.

Could you possibly select your favorite three tracks? (yes, this is a test, though not of your ability to accomplish the mission)

My favorite three Beatles tracks... terebi_me August 1 2006, 21:06:20 UTC
I can't fucking do it. I tried. I failed miserably.

Here's a small list of the ones that make me go "ooooowheeee!" when I hear them though - I'll try to keep it brief:
"Eight Days A Week"
"Fixing A Hole"
"I'm A Loser"
"Everybody's Got Something to Hide..."
"The End"
"If I Needed Someone"
"Oh! Darling"
"Hey Bulldog"
"She's A Woman"
"I Am The Walrus"
"Paperback Writer"
"Things We Said Today"
"Got To Get You Into My Life"
"Savoy Truffle"
"Love Me Do"

This is EXTREME restraint. Usually when asked though what my favorite Beatles song is, I sit on "Eight Days A Week" because it is completely perfect and seamless, like a chrome happiness machine, without being insipid - if it was a Paul song it wouldn't work.

Also? The Beta Band. Soooo wonderful. I wish I'd seen them live; they are no more because the main songwriter is severely bipolar and nothing is ever good enough for him. I haven't yet heard his new project King Biscuit Time, but I bet it's fantastic - but last I heard, he had disappeared and people are scared that he might not be

I'm clearly not as big a beta band fan as you, but I left the concert about 2/3 the way through 'cause it was boring and I had to work in the morning.

You can beat me later for saying that.

Hey, ain't no shame in leaving a show early when you're bored! I've done that for many bands that I really really like... and of course, like I said, I never got a chance to see the Betas live, so maybe they WERE boring. It's just vexing to think that I'll never get a chance.

You know who was probably boring live (by the time they played in the States, anyway)? THE BEATLES! You couldn't hear anything except screaming, or see anything but tiny little dots in cool suits.

Haha, I love the Beatles and I love "I Eat Cannibals." Everyone wins.

I love me some Beatles as well... anonymous August 8 2006, 21:02:03 UTC
Just logging in on your poll. While my CD collection comes in at around 1500 or so cds, the Beatles definitely have their place on my iPod. Mind you I'm trying to put one song from every album I own on the damn thing, which has been taking me months, and I have decided that I have to start being choosy with them. I have some where near 60 Depeche Mode tracks on there because I own almost every album and single ever released. And to the favorite three. No way could I do it. From the early stuff, "Eight Days a Week" sticks with me on most days. To the early drum and bass rhythms of "Tomorrow Never Knows" (speaking of which have you ever heard the cover of that song by Danielle Dax?). But my two favorite albums by the Beatles from start to finish are Abby Road and The White Album. When I was a kid listening to my mom's vinyl version of the White Album "Revolution No. 9" influenced me beyond all other music. That's how I got into sampling and electronic music. So yeah, I love the Beatles, and I will be 34 in December ( ... )
