I've been going crazy for the last hour or so... I know it's just Friday afternoon jitters, I'm bored as hell, and the editor whose book this is isn't here right now... so I bring the question to you, my esteemed LJ comrades.

Poll Science fiction vs. Sci-Fi vs. SF?

SF is the most politically correct abbreviation among science fiction fans, but "Science Fiction" would be completely appropriate. "Sci-Fi" is sometimes used insultingly, and is sometimes pronounced "skiffy".

OK, done showing you what a nerd I am now.

I like to say "sci-fi" (in the Sci-Fi Channel sense) but when it comes to discussing works of science fiction literature, Harlan Ellison will scream me to death if I call it anything other than SF. Fortunately (or un) it's not Harlan's book I'm working on.

I wish I could just work on Harlan Ellison books for the rest of time. I know where things stand with him.

It's probably a lit fan vs "media" fan thing. I think that with the Sci-fi Channel's popularity, "sci-fi" is becoming more accepted, but crusty old grognards like myself prefer SF, at least when talking about books.

It's sort of the Trekkies/Trekkers debate all over again. :)

I don't remember if I ever met Harlan Ellison (I think I was in an elevator with him once at a con, IIRC) but I LOVE his stuff. Deathbird stories is one of my favorite collections.

I voted "Science Fiction" for written works. I believe that SF is the proper term for Speculative Fiction which could include the sub genre Science Fiction.

i still like sci-fi, it was a code term at the bookstore, pronounced "skiffy", with readers being "skiffies". always thought it was cute.
