i use skype, and neither love nor hate it. i find it serviceable. when i call someone on who is on a landline, they hear me fine and seem to notice nothing, although those w/ caller ID are confused. when i call another skype user, they sometimes bitch about static or lag, but i notice nothing. i also use it w/ a web cam sometimes, and have no problems there, either. the only real downside is random people calling me, but w/ the right privacy settings, you can prevent that.
skype is the only service of that nature i've used. i keep considering getting real VoIP but haven't gotten around to it yet
of course, another benefit to skype is, it's free, as long as you have a mic (and headphones if desired) already so trying it costs you nothing, so no loss if you hate it. if you want someone to try it out w/ when you install it, let me know and i'll log on, i've been leaving it off lately unless i have a call arranged.
I've had Vonage since 2004 and can only recommend it.
If you're looking for a cheap, fully-functional landline, choose Vonage. If you primarily want to make calls via the computer from anywhere, choose Skype.
