"Awhile" is an adverb, so it modifies a verb directly (stay awhile), whereas "a while" is a noun phrase that tends to follow a preposition (stay for a while). So you're not supposed to use the one word version after prepositions. You can see why this rule is going to fall out sooner rather than later...
