just learned the rule for "awhile" vs. "a while" today, even though it probably won't exist in ten years.

Ooh. Explain it to me?

"Awhile" is an adverb, so it modifies a verb directly (stay awhile), whereas "a while" is a noun phrase that tends to follow a preposition (stay for a while). So you're not supposed to use the one word version after prepositions. You can see why this rule is going to fall out sooner rather than later...
