I'm glad that everyone is okay. I still can't believe you go walking among skunks with no problems...I wouldn't dare try that! But maybe they recognize you?
The coyote in my yard seems to have taken up residence somewhere nearby. I've found the entrails of several squirrels around the yard. I know they have to live too, but I'd like it to be elsewhere.
I read about your coyote problems. I can't imagine how you can keep them away. Before we fenced in our place, I'd find bits of animals in our backyard. Very disturbing.
I think with the skunks it was a combo of things. While they were agitated, they are used to me but not outside. Plus, if they stomped, I waited until they could back up some. I also wasn't looking at them; I'm sure body language speaks volumes and if I meant them harm I would be looking at them. Most critters really don't want any trouble and will avoid it if possible.
I lost a beloved cat to coyotes about 17 years ago. I know they need to live too, but not here if I can help it.
When I was reading up about Nova Scotia, a book mentioned that two new mammals in the area are skunks and coyotes. Sounds like a climate change thing to me.
OMG, love your icon - what a great shot! Do you think your fencing efforts, once you employ them, will be able to keep the coyotes out? Hope so! I think the skunks and the coons know you are 'critter friendly', and that you try to help them - not to mention providing a free banquet every night.
Wow, did not know owls have no sense of smell. Guess they don't generally need it.
I'm hopeful, but truth be told, if they really wanted to get in, they'll do it. Like burglers, the idea is to make it hard enough that they'll pass up your place for somewhere easier.
Maybe you could put up a sign, one of those 'this yard is protected by human beens', with a little skull and crossbones! I don't think coyotes can read, but you never know... I loved your skunk pics you put up earlier, so cute!
