I felt the same way about this... I mean, it was enjoyable, but kind of forgettable. Not a bad book by any means, though!

Yet, I still think Discord's Apple is her weakest work.

I checked out your review. I like how you called it a beach read. That's very apt. I just expected a little more with some areas (especially with the fantasy and historical elements).

As far as her weakest work goes, I'd probably need some distance from Steel before I make a judgement call, but I think you're right about Discord's Apple. Now that I think about it, none of her stand alone works have engaged me on the same level as some of her Kitty books. Voices of Dragons is probably my favorite of the stand alones so far (haven't read After the Golden Age yet. Just got it from the library).

I think of her stand-alones, After the Golden Age is by far the best. I'll look forward to that review. :)

But you're right: the stand-alones really aren't working on the same level, are they? Though I did enjoy Voices of Dragons quite a bit, there's a bit of discord there, trying to marry the normal-teenager plot with the fantasy/dragons plot.

I have to wonder if Vaughn just works better with series? Kitty and the Midnight Hour is probably my least favorite of the Kitty books (although I do still like it), but it wasn't until book two that I was stay-up-past-my-bedtime hooked. Part of what I like about the Kitty books is the character that Kitty grows into, and how her world is developed. You don't get a lot of that with book one.

Or maybe I'm reading too much into it. After all, I haven't read After the Golden Age yet :)

Oh, I meant to mention this: I'd really like to see Carrie Vaughn tackle space opera. :)
