Fantastic review! I've been a little leery of series for the reasons you mentioned. However, based on your review, I think I'll give it a try. I have The Red Pyramid sitting on my shelf waiting to read as well. :)

I haven't touched The Red Pyramid because I hear it's not as good. Eventually, I'll end up giving it a chance.
