YES. The scenes where Andy comforts a stumbling drunk Kerensky had me laughing so hard.
I know you've read more works by Scalzi, but how do you think Redshirts compares? I know a lot of people seems to think it falls a little short. (Well, apparently not THAT many people has it got the Hugo nom and all...)
I couldn't put this one down, and I had that same reaction to his previous book, Fuzzy Nation, and that one was more of a surprise, because I wasn't sure I'd like it.
Of course, his Old Man's War stuff is just awesome, but it's a different flavor. I think some people complain because his last two novels are humor-centric, and they want their SF to be SERIOUS or at least mostly so. :)

I think this is the part where Redshirts becomes less about Start Trek, and more about criticizing bad writing in science fiction.
