A Tale of Two Canons: White Collar and Suits

Jul 12, 2011 22:55

Here's the thing--when White Collar started in 2009, I really struggled with it.

I mean, I got it, the appeal. Matt Bomer was a sexy BAMF seen previously on Tru Calling, Traveler, and Chuck, he's smoking and has that endearing hipster gay thing going on. Tim DeKay has been on basically every show that's aired since 1996 (though I personally liked ( Read more... )

I just want to jump in and be even less polite than you and say, SERIOUSLY, SHAWN/LASSITER, WHAT THE FUCK. How does that make more sense to folks than Gus/Shawn? HOW? Oh, I know. White dudes. >:(

And yet I, too, am taken with 'Suits' and Harvey/Mike. As a show, I like that most of the more central characters thus far, both male and female and of all races & ethnicities, get to be strong & clever. But I also wish there could be more shows where there are opportunities for popular ships that aren't just two special white dudes. And more shows that focus on characters of color as much as the white dudes. Basically, the world needs more Burton Gusters.

indeed re: Psych. endless endless frustration with that fandom that remains largely unrectified.

Truer words, man. I guess I just wonder what the show would be like if, say, Harvey was Will Yun Lee. Would it still be the same? Or would fandom somehow make Mike/Louis the OTP?

Thank god the world will never know on that score, I guess. But--what if Gina Torres was Mike's senior partner? That would just be amazing.

I was genuinely surprised that the ship du jour for Psych is Shawn/Lassiter! WTF? It's the Gus and Shawn show, all the way!

The thing I love about Suits is that the women are thus far awesome (and while I wish there was more female interaction, at least they don't appear to just talk about men) and that Harvey has no issues with a woman boss and there isn't that underlying creepiness of "I would/have/going to tap that."

I do like the relationship between Harvey and Jessica, especially that there's every indication that Jessica is a partner in name as the founder of the company, which is just boss as hell. She clearly has all her shit going on and everyone (so far) respects her for it without question or any "because she's female" jokes.

Though, oddly enough, I was reading one story that referred to Jessica as "Mrs. Pearson" and I had the visceral reaction of wanting to throw my computer across the room. Jessica Pearson clearly kept her own goddamn name, because it's on the title of her own goddamn firm.

Yes! It's awesome how there's no jokes/asides of having a woman boss and Jessica is so BAMF and classy too!

Ugh, "Mrs. Pearson"? I definitely second your urge to throw your computer across the room.

I wonder who is Hardman though?

I don't get the Shawn/Lassiter, either. Clearly the OTP is Shawn/Gus! Now I want to watch Psych some more.

I think what bothers me the most about Suits is actually Rachel and the way Mike is always asking her for help. But she is clearly awesome and has her own office and doesn't actually let Mike trample all over her, so...I don't know why it rubs me the wrong way. But Gina Torres and her character? amazing.

That's fair--and I think the recent episodes have really begun to address that imbalance in experience relative to position within the firm. It's entirely possible that, if the writers and showrunners handle it correctly, Rachel's story will be the most compelling of them all. She has just as far to go as Mike, and to his credit, I do think Mike is aware of that. It just wasn't until recently that Rachel was aware of just how tenuous Mike's own position at the firm was, and while that doesn't necessarily earn him points (him being a moral barometer towards her own choices is just beyond ridiculous) it does make them more equitable, in a way.

I know I'm not your friend but I couldn't help commenting. I stumbled here from the suits usa community. Also, sorry to be late to the party.

So much yes to everything you just said! We seem to follow some of the same fandoms. I especially agree with Psych. when I first got into that fandom I was shocked at the lack of Shawn/Gus.

Suits is wonderful, clever and has great eye candy. I agree with the points on diversity and roles of women but TV has gotten so bad so lately that seeing Gina Torres as THE BOSS sealed it for me.

No worries at all. Glad you found something that resonated with you. :) Gina Torres could read the phone book and I would watch raptly.
