User Guide II: The Wrath of Canon Characters (Still fighting to be brief!)

Jun 04, 2009 22:01

In the last resource post we covered the basics of the Star Trek universe. In this one we're going to talk about the life and histories of other TOS characters, except for Spock, who is getting his own post because I am way too bloody chatty about the dude to make it fit into this one ( Read more... )

Sorry! I just found your post on Jim, together with other background details on Starfleet and the Federation. And it bears repeating: thank you so much for doing all of this. It's been years since I watched/read about Trek---it's nice to have all this awesome meta about the characters we love and the Federation.

You're very welcome. I'm working on a follow up post to the biographical information about Jim from the TOS storyline that discusses the psychology of Kirk and why his characterization is a) consistent across the two timelines and b) why a character like Kirk is so necessary in the otherwise rule-adhering Starfleet.

Glad to know this is helpful!

Will Saavik be mentioned in the post on Spock? Because she's kind of awesome, even though she was probably never born in the new timeline.

Indeed she well. I think understanding Saavik is necessary to understand the latter half of Spock's life, particularly with regards to the events that lead to the alternate timeline. It's part of why that post is such a pain in the ass to write: there's so much important stuff that I can't really leave any of it out.

I think the greatest irony of the alternate timeline is that, as Saavik likely won't exist in the new one, the chain of events that lead Spock to be involved in Romulus in the prime universe would never take place in AOS. It must be a very difficult thing for Spock Prime to internalize.

This is an awesome post. One nitpick though.

Other than her (and Sulu, obvs), Chekov has no canonical relationships.

Didn't he have a Russian ex-girlfriend in the episode with all the space hippies?

Indeed; Irina Galliulin from "The Way to Eden." The only reason I didn't include her was because their relationship was very brief and took place during the Academy; the context of the relationship ended up in my "blah blah five-year mission" handwave of Too Much Stuff Happened to Recount. But it's good to note nonetheless.
