Putting this in the "cross-dressing" tag, although Twitter (where I found the link) reminds me that the assumption that all such figures found in the archives must have been cross-dressed women does erase the possible presence of trans men:

Interesting. Did you see that Billy Cudrup movie about Kynaston, Stage Beauty? Problematic but gripping.

Yes - I've seen it twice, I think! I enjoyed many things about it (although, as you mention, it does have its issues). It always makes me wonder why there aren't more movies set during that period.
