I made some soup this afternoon. See, I bought two heads of romaine lettuce at the farmer's market last Friday before I remembered that I don't really like romaine lettuce (I guess I don't dislike it; it's just kind of - there, as far as leafy green vegetables go) - so I cleaned it and made salad, but was totally uninspired to finish eating the ( Read more... )

I like romaine better than iceberg, but if that isn't damning with faint praise, I don't know what is. ;)

Mostly, though, I'm commenting to link you to this - it's the Sampson and Gregory thing I mentioned last Thursday. I have no idea what to make of it or if it's likely to be at all useful to your students, but it's at least strange and funny?

Yeah, that's about how I feel about romaine, too! Baby romaine is a different story, oddly enough; it tastes more like it has actual nutrients in it, instead of just water and crunch.

Thanks for the link! It's always helpful to have examples of how to get tone across. Sometimes I think the hardest thing is getting students to see that all of Shakespeare isn't just rarefied and "poetic"; characters have interactions that we can still recognize today.

Yes! One thing I love about that Tumblr thing is that it really brings out the fact that, irrespective of when their interaction was written, Sampson and Gregory are clearly "bros."

I'm sure I've had baby romaine before but I can't remember it, to be honest. As far as salad is concerned, I try to find mixes that also include carrots and/or spinach since I know I can taste the difference when both are involved.

My students in one section are giving the characters "bro" names: so far they have Bromeo (of course), Mercutibro, and Benvolibro. I don't know if they plan on trying to find names for Sampson and Gregory as well. :)

They sell those clear clamshell boxes of baby romaine, so I sometimes wind up with them if the rest of the salad selection isn't looking very good.
