martha my martha

So a friend of mine has BBC America and, thanks to me, has been watching episodes of Doctor Who here and there, and has decided to Tivo S3 and watch it in earnest. This has led to a lot of Martha-squee from me in her direction. And given the upcoming return of Martha, and due to the fact that I almost did this in someone else's LJ comments before ( Read more... )

Thankyouthankyouthankyou. I needed this. I have to admit- I've never really understood people's Marthalove. I liked her fine, but she never did it for me in the same way that S1 Rose did. I felt like so often the continued emoRose arc did such a disservice to her character that I got robbed of a lot of character exploration we could have otherwise spent time on, besides so often putting her in the same old light of Unrequited Crush and Feeling Second Best. Those got old.

So this, what you've done here, will let me rewatch S3 with new eyes, so YAY!

Oh, I'm so glad that my ramblings might actually be of use! I actually do agree with you about the annoying, repetitive quality of the emoRose stuff, and the fact that that time could have been far better spent on other aspects of Martha's character. But there's a lot that I love about Martha as well--as you see. :)

Heh. I don't know that I would call Rose a dumbass--she's got a different thing going on; she's really good at adapting quickly to situations and taking things as they come, where I think Martha tends to be more cautious, interested in finding out everything she can about something before she acts. I just happen to respond to Martha's way of doing things more than Rose's. But I did have a bit of a double-take during S3, like, "Oh, so *that's* what it's like to really love a companion. I thought I knew, but I didn't really ( ... )
