So after several days of heat-wave temperatures (90+), we've had two really cool days, which have been lovely. I did things that weren't lying in front of a fan and trying to read! How exciting! Yesterday and today I ( Read more... )

Olive oil cake sounds wonderful. So does that meal. We made baked beans last week and they were ridiculously filling (probably all that fictitious protein). Granted, they had ham in them, but not a lot of it, and also maple syrup and bourbon because my cooking philosophy really does boil down to "everything's better with booze!"

So very happy it has cooled down. The weekend was pretty awful.

I don't do much baking, partly because I am at a pretty rudimentary level in the kitchen, and partly because I don't have much space at all (so, no room for kneading and cooling racks and things), but mostly because then I have a whole cake/batch of muffins/pan of brownies to eat all by myself. Which I *can* do, but probably shouldn't. :) So I was really glad to try olive oil cake without having to make or buy a whole one!

I really didn't know that my mother didn't believe in bean protein until the other day! (Well, she thinks they have some protein, apparently, but that the amounts have been vastly exaggerated. Or something.) I've never tried to make baked beans - I bet yours were delicious! "Better with booze" is an excellent philosophy. :)

I think I'm growing to dislike hot weather even more than winter, which is unexpected. (Not that I am a *fan* of winter, mind.) I can put on layers and grit my teeth when it's cold, at least...

Well, the bourbon was an excellent idea for baked beans and we're definitely doing that one again. I pretty much always throw some sort of red wine into pasta sauce because it's not really pasta sauce without wine (at least not for me). But that really is the extent of my cooking--I can't follow recipes to save my life and I do not know why. And whatever baking gene that my mother and my sister both have completely jumped over me. Which is why I love slow cooker recipes. ;)

I've always preferred winter to summer (some irrational toddler part of me still loves snow), so this kind of heat makes me just want to hide in basements. Plus, as you say, you can always put on more clothing. What gets me is the humidity. I can't abide it.

One of these days, I want to take cooking lessons, and also get a slow-cooker! I think the latter would probably improve my life more quickly (and I would probably make more meat dishes, because it's hard to undercook things in a slow-cooker).

I used to really dislike snow, possibly because you couldn't just do the safe, sensible thing and stay off the roads when they got bad; we always still had to go to school/work. But I'm getting better - and having taller boots has really helped! (I can't believe it took me so long to come to that realization.)

I think hiding in basements is perfectly valid. I go to the library a lot, which helps. :)
