It's a bit of a chore to get an Oyster card; you have to fill out an application and everything. But what's good about them is that you can just put as much money on them as you need. How much are you going to be using the tube and/or bus? And how long are you going to be in town?

Yeah, it's the whole application part that makes me wonder. Well, that, and being convinced I'll forget to add money to the card, or something dumb like that. I'm pretty sure most of our traveling will be in zones 1-2, but I couldn't figure out from the website how much that would be with an Oyster card (though they were sure to tell me several times that it would be much cheaper than with cash!).

We're going to be in town for five days (plus one ride to Victoria station the day we leave). Part of the problem is that we're playing a lot of this by ear at this point; my friend took the bar exam, moved all her stuff out of her apartment, and then went to Japan, so she hasn't had a chance to think too much about London! I know for sure we're going to the Globe two evenings, and we want to hit a couple museums and then maybe go to Hampstead Heath, since neither of us has been, but other than that, I'm not really sure where we'll need to go.

If you're only going to be in town for five days, I would just get a week's travel card for zones 1-2. That will probably be the cheapest and definitely the easiest way to go. Unless you think you won't be using the tube/bus any more than once a day, in which case you should pay as you go, buying single journeys.
