The Orphan's Tales are original fairy tales set in a quasi-West Asian fantasy world and are very similar in tone to The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making . But the latter was originally a fictitious children's story that a character in the very adult novel Palimpsest had loved when she was young, and when under stress or in danger she would use a couple of phrases from the story as a kind of mantra.

Anything by Catherynne Valente, in my experience, is going to be beautifully written, and absorbing, and will probably put the reader through the emotional wringer. Palimpsest especially. There are no characters who make it through that book unscathed, either physically or psychically.

Comments are always welcome!

And I appreciate the advice; it's always nice to know what you're getting into with a new author, especially if it turns out that her other works are different in tone or emotional impact than the one you've been reading.
