I played FFXI from the US launch until about a year after it came out. It was fun, and I made a lot of awesome friends, but oh god the grinding. Part of the reason I quit (the total of three times I did) was because if you didn't have a group of 4-5 others past level 15ish, you were pretty much screwed. It was impossible to solo in that game. I don't know if they changed that or not, as it's been a few years since I was last on.
