WOW!

This is so, so, so fantastic -- thank you for writing such an amazing fic for a queenly gift! :D

I love the way you've set it up here, with the "five times" and expounded on all the different ways Eloise truly "lost" her son, whether to death or her own actions. Running back to camp to still find Daniel's body and the whole aftermath of his experiments were especially heartbreaking, and I love that Charles calls Eloise out for her role -- because it's so true; her determination to push him towards physics meant that he got sick and had to go back to the island, perpetuating the cycle over again. And this line is particular is so great: There was nothing more she could do; she had had to send him there, and it was in Daniel’s hands now. If he was ever going to change anything, it could only be done on the island. But Eloise was starting to doubt, faced with the reality of his departure, as she never had before. It's so cool too, that you weave in the scene between Charlotte and Eloise you wrote about in that drabble, because that ( ... )

Oh, I may yet attack that same scene from the drabble from Daniel's POV where he starts to remember, watch this space!

There's possibly an AU in there somewhere - what if Eloise had played it differently, decided to let Daniel play the piano instead of physics, if she'd decided to go down the route of making sure he never went to the island so he never got stuck in 1977? Or would the universe just course correct somehow so Daniel ended up on the island anyway (maybe even on Flight 815)?

Maybe one for after the luau? What do you think?

That's a great idea -- I'm still torn over whether Eloise was doing her duty to the island or trying to save Daniel in the end, and whether course correction could have even played a role. Especially him ending up on Flight 815 -- that is a very cool concept! Do it, do it! ;D

The way I've always played it in previous fics was that Eloise was trying to save Daniel, and had fallen out with Charles because he had felt that she should put duty to the island first. I have to admit I've often wondered why Eloise never tried the "stopping Daniel from ever going to the island at all" solution, but then she was the one who used to talk about course correction and maybe she thought (knew?) it could never work?
