Here's my utterly uneducated guesses on the Oscar winners. I've seen a pitiful few of these films, so these aren't necessarily my personal favorites; mostly, they're a collection of friends' strong opinions, public opinion, and the usual Oscar politics ( Read more... )

Oh, I totally agree with you. The Best Animated Film was framed as a reward for animation studios -- "so you don't get left out!" -- but it creates all sorts of ridiculous problems besides shutting them out of Best Picture. Should "Star Wars Ep. 1" be considered an 'animated feature'? How about "Sky Captain"?

And it creates artificial distinctions, as well. I heard a quote from Pixar's Lou Romano, who said that he felt that Kung-Fu Panda should get "Best Animated Film" -- because even though Wall-E was a better MOVIE overall, he felt Kung-Fu Panda was better at being an animated film.
