So, I managed to go through the gauntlet of trying to get a room of Dragon*con at one of the more happening hotels of the con, the Marriott. What resulted was about almost an hour and a half of just waiting around and trying to get into both the website and the phone system. Unless you really want to stay in the con hotels, you could also look at some of the other hotels that can be reached via the train. Not as convenient but might work.

Anyhow, this practice of releasing the room block on one day like this is totally controlled by the con. AWA chose to do the same kind of thing in February, not for any other reason than that's when AWA wanted to do it. That's a power you get when you control the whole room block.
