Where the hell did you get the idea that the Zen doesn't need software to load music onto it? o_O It needs software to load music onto it, and if it's anything like the other Creative devices, it needs drivers to even work on a computer, plus software if you want to load non-music files onto it as well.

a few people were talking about the easy drag and drop capabilities in reviews. The way it sounded it wasn't software based it was simply plug it in, oh look new hardware found, open it up via explorer, drag and drop files.

Creative's PMPs use a proprietary protocol over USB, so you will need to put a driver disc in at the very least. It's supported via libnjb on linux/unix. Not being able to use it as a standard USB drive on any computer without carrying the driver disc everywhere is a major flaw for this kind of device imo.

iPod, on the other hand, uses the standard USB mass storage protocol, but has HFS+ on it by default. You can configure it to use FAT32 though.

Screw both of them and get an Archos! It uses the standard USB interface, so doesn't need extra software on ANY platform, has the same capacity as those other PMPs AND it's smaller AND it costs less.
