I finally started looking into HTML 5 last in depth and I somehow found a link to the uxlondon.com site because it was written in HTML 5.  When I arrived I noticed the nice clean design work of Clearleft (I’m assuming since it was their conference) but what I really wanted to see was under the hood. I heard there's no separation like html vs. xhtml. Now it's html5 with xml (or some other) bindings, which I don't really understand yet. I bring this up because in that last image, the br is totally not xml-friendly just lettin itself hang wide open like that.

That is correct, HTML 5 does not care which method you use. I personally will continue following the XHTML convention and self close tags.
