Preaching opportunity

We had a retaining wall put in this week, comprised of 76 landscaping timbers (6"x6"x8'), and backfilled with 18 tons of gravel and 68 tons of fill dirt. They just finished it last night. Now we have a little backyard, and our house will not fall off the hill. Yay ( Read more... )

So, are you going to do it?

One thing I think is almost always helpful for people is connecting Gen 1-3 to Rev 21-22. It gives us a bigger scope for "Kingdom" and "Mission", and a real sense of urgency for living now. I'd love to hear you preach on that.

I told my pastor yesterday that I would do it, and that I was thinking of preaching on stuff I've been thinking about / trying to deal with lately, e.g. solitude/hospitality/community stuff, which he signed off on. But I'm feeling pretty out of my depth and bankrupt to talk about that, a useless parrot sounding out someone else's words.

Peace, reassurance, pleasure are the goals I seek
I cannot crawl one inch outside my proper skin
I talk of love, a scholar's parrot may talk Greek
But, self-imprisoned, always end where I beginIt would be comparatively easy to fall back on some kind of kingdom message, since I have lots of raw material to draw from in terms of a long history of thoughts/reading/experiences, plus it emerges robustly from the text of Scripture, and I'm comparatively comfortable writing an expository sermon. But my leading edge right now is the solitude stuff, and if possible, I'd like to preach from there, if I can. More authentic, divine word mediated through human personality, and all that. But I'm not sure I can ( ... )
