Read any good books lately?

This afternoon I got to help Brett with his master's thesis - he's trying to identify a noise-optimal refrigerant valve design, based on experiments he's done using air and water, and had fluid mechanical questions re: how to use his air and water data to predict acoustic performance with R134. The answers involve dimensional analysis, and ( Read more... )

Sounds like an interesting book. We're going through Mudhouse Sabbath. I've only read the first chapter so far, but it deals with integrating practices from Judaism into a Christian life. Actually a very fast read also, if you're looking for something to just sit down and read in a day (afternoon?) or whatever.

Thanks for the suggestion. Sounds worthwhile.

Congrats again on the job, man. Things sure are moving fast for you right now.

I like Cloud. He's so solid. And accessible to the non-counseling/psychology world.

Here's what I've read/been reading lately:
_Reading the Bible with Heart and Mind_ by Tremper Longman (gag)
_An Introduction to the Old Testament_ also by Longman (slightly less gag but still...)
_My First White Friend_ by Patricia Raybon
_DSM-IV-TR_
_Domestic Violence at the Margins_ edited by Natalie Sokoloff
_Prostitution, Trafficking and Traumatic Stress_ edited by Melissa Farley
_Origins of Difference_ by Elaine Storkey
and...a bunch of articles

Sheesh.

Well, I'm up again at 3AM - this is what happens when I forget to take my Effexor.

Sorry about the gagging. Since TEDS, I've thought those "Introductions" were unfortunately named. They need a more pompous name like "Prolegomena" or something. I think on some level I just felt let down, thinking I was gonna get, you know, maybe an introduction to the OT, rather than tedious technicalities of authorship, date, textual sources and audience. I mean, imagine if your Introduction to Shakespeare or Plato consisted of that. It's valuable work that sheds light on meaning (I did enjoy the textual criticism work in my exegesis classes) and somebody's gotta do it, but it feels like bait-and-switch.

What's Effexor? I'm up at all hours too. I still sleep like shit. It's so discouraging.

I agree about the Introductions. I really could not care less about a lot of the stuff they talked about. Date, debates about how many people actually authored the book, why conservatives are right... some of it was interesting, but... basically what I'm saying is, I'm with you.

Effexor is the brand name of my antidepressant - specifically, a selective serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. When I forget to take it, I get weird symptoms like dizziness, sleeplessness, headache, and general malaise. Oh, and freaky bad dreams. So, irregular dosing is Not Recommended.

Cloud's book sounds interesting.

I think I have a larger stack of interesting books that I want to read than I actually am reading. I am going to go through Knowing God with two girls at church -- I am way excited to reread it, and slogging my way through "Urban Ministry" which is more of a textbook type of book, and hopefully reread Divided by Faith followed by reading United by Faith (books on race and the church).

I will have to find ways to make time to read again. I can feel my mind slowing turning into a slushy.

That's cool. Here's to Q making time to read. I hate the slushy-mind feeling, although I usually think of it as tapioca.

I'm still in the very beginning of your Feminism Without Illusions, but I am planning to read it.

It's good. Just send it back whenever you're finished... Unless you take ten years. Then you should send it back sooner rather than later. :)
