From Old English, myrige, or maybe Common (Vulgar?) Germanic, murgijaz, which means "short-lasting". Personally, I go with the "short-lasting" bit, it has connotations of "making time fly", or something. It's where you get "mergelijc" from. The 'y' made a "oo" sort of sound, but got hit with Kentish, so you write it with an 'e' and eventually
