“I love talking about nothing. It is the only thing I know anything about.”
~Oscar Wilde

So, I'm making good, steady, if slightly slow, progress on a fanfic of mine, and I realize something: I still have no idea what it's about. Or, rather, it doesn't really appear to be about anything. It's just a cute, fluffy, slice of life bit, but I'm ( Read more... )

Hee hee, I know how you feel. For Gundam Wing, I have about three fics that I started and realized I had no idea where I was going with them, so I stopped to figure it out later. "Dirty Little Secret" actually started out like that, too - I started it six years ago, but didn't really know where I wanted it to go, and then recently I picked it up again and revamped the whole plot so now it actually has one.

Sometimes stories just write themselves, but starting them (Like I did with DLS) can help you figure out the point later. But also, there's nothing wrong with a PWP. :) Sometimes a story's point is just to make you feel good.

Practically all my fics are like that. I don't know what I'm writing, I guess. But for the humorous oneshots I write, maybe it’s okay if they're a little pointless.

Still, I can't help but think that my stories can't be very memorable or worthwhile if nothing ever happens in them.

True. <3 My luck goes out to you. Hope you figure out what you're writing soon. :)

Also, there's nothing wrong with a slice of life. Stories don't always have to have Plot.

True, I like little slice of life pieces, but I also like meatier fiction, and in the end I think that my plot-less fics are all too similar to each other and must be kinda boring.

They have no substance, and while they might bring about a laugh or two while reading, they don’t continue to resonate after the last word is read.

I like writing my funny, pointless stories, but sometimes I wish I could write a little more, y’know?

Which stories of yours do you consider plotless other than "Little by Little" and "Less Than Hero," which is a character study and wouldn't necessarily have plot? "Shortcomings," maybe?

BTW, when are you going to upload the rest of your stories to FFN? I didn't realize how many were missing until I went to look for "Shortcomings," because I couldn't remember the title, and discovered it wasn't there.
