For part of my senior project when I was in school, I drew a timeline of fashion from Ancient Greece - the 1960s. And the references for men's clothing in the 60s were a bitch to find. At one point I called my parents in tears, and my dad recommended going to the library and looking at issues of Playboy from the 60s, as they had really cutting edge men's fashion spreads then (French Playboy still does).

What I ended up doing was google image searching for film stills of Michael Caine. Which may be more feasible (if less fun) than looking at backissues of Playboy. If you can think of any movie or actor that works for the time period, status, etc. of what you want, look for film stills.

Also, of course, there's The Costumer's Manifesto. She also has some really good researching tips here.

The Costumer's Manifesto is seriously one of the most useful things on the internet. Which reminds me, I need to re-read her advice for going to Paris on the cheap...

You should watch Life on Mars. For seventiesness? And because everyone should watch Life on Mars. The UK version, not the US remake. Um, the clothes are really awesome? I want to wear all of the main character's clothes.

For mafianess sadly I can only think of Some Like It Hot, which is perhaps not...verisimilitudinous?

It's a series; it is sixteen hours of awesome. It's available on the internet, but if you haven't seen it by the time you are back in Toronto come to my apartment and we will marathon the DVDs.
