Ok, I have possibly an odd question. My wisdom teeth came in and one, yes one, of my teeth is crooked. I don't really want a whole set of braces for one crooked tooth. It is my left front tooth on top so it's really having a negative effect on me. I didn't ask my dentist yet but will when my wisdom teeth are extracted but is there any other way ( Read more... )

long long long comment, sorry! jumpers February 13 2008, 23:16:22 UTC
Third molars are wild. I'm not an orthodontist, (just a hygiene student!) but from my understanding, wisdom teeth can and do cause malocclusion if your jaw isn't large enough to contain them. Definitely ask your dentist about it when you get your teeth out. Your tooth has a much better chance of straightening out on its own if you get your wisdom teeth removed. Especially if the crookedness is something that came around recently. Generally, I think wisdom teeth are a total pain. So many people have a hard time taking care of them since they're so far back in the mouth. Because of this, they're difficult to floss, and I know personally my boyfriend has at least one of his wisdom teeth filled, and his friend had severe periodontal issues that affected nearby teeth because his wisdom tooth wasn't being maintained properly. I sound like a freaking anti third molar-ationist! haha ( ... )

I can floss, I just don't want to lol. Waterpik tries to say they are better than flossing. I don't care either way I just want clean teeth. I saw pictures of periodontal disease and it scared the shit out of me so I floss daily. I'd prefer waterpik for simplicity but I can live.

Oh and yes, this is recent, it wasn't there back in June/July when I had pictures taken at my sisters wedding, they were 100% straight. I didn't notice it until about a month ago and wouldn't have if I didn't take a pic of myself. It's the angle that makes it look bad to be honest (it looks worse in other pictures, fine in some, and I don't notice it much looking in the mirror), I posted pics below.

If its a single proclined tooth then perhaps a removable appliance will be help you there, but without pictures and such i cant really tell you too much. any movement more than 3-4 mm will require a fixed appliance just so they can control where the root of the tooth is going. on the bright side if its a single tooth thats at issue, it most likely wont be a 4K treatment plan. As to the 3rd molars, read above, but also know that unfortunately its gotten to the point that just being there is reason enough to extract 3rd molars. If you have the space and good OH then there shouldnt be an issue in retaining those teeth, but only a dentist could tell you that for sure. And yes, an unerupted wisdom tooth could easily cause the migration of teeth in the arch, particularly if it is any way impacted or even just erupting at a slight angle, and this can be asymptomatic and could be the reason your dentist is recommending extraction

Well, I have a webcam built in my laptop so I took a pic (best I could do with it).

It's not really severe I wouldn't think and I didn't notice until I actually saw it on a webcam pic. It's overlapping slightly onto my other tooth but my other tooth is still straight.

I'm making an appt to see the oral surgeon tomorrow. The dentist never told me why I needed them out just that it is recommended. I don't have dental insurance so it kinda sucks and he told me I could wait till I get coverage but it won't be for a long long time.

I also read they can maybe put a crown on it? Is this possible? It is definitely a far more cheaper solution than 4k braces. (I have a crown on a back tooth and it was something like 400-500).

There are lots of options available, but if you dont treat the source of the problem, recurrence is a definite possibility. However you would definitely not want to crown this tooth to merely correct a slight rotation or tip (kinda hard to tell in those pictures, but really looks minor) especially if treating the actual problem could lead to the tooth returning to its previous position. As well any ortho treatment to fix that (unless theres some really complex underlying problem) would be fairly reasonable (ie. less than 4K) as its a single arch problem, and could quite possibly be treated with either a removable appliance, invisalign type aligners, etc. Another treatment possibility is a simple composite or porcelain veneer, which would be 200-400 depending on the materials etc. As to the waterpik, well, its better than nothing, but nothing yet beats good old fashioned floss :)
