I don't follow any of the webcomics (I look at XKCD from time to time), but I loved your description of the newly appeared dad-character as Snape McTarkin O'Denethor.
We have gotten through that storyline: Sweetheart twigged at the end of last week and spent this week deciding what to do about it. I'm not actually sure it was intended to be funny character torture; the escalating over-the-top quality is eventually ludicrous, because there is no way that leaving a fire door ajar for five minutes will result in the destruction of Earth by volcanoes, but the effects on Sweetheart are upsetting and the fact that she's willing to believe the escalation-that instead of stopping for five seconds and fact-checking the likelihood of the Yellowstone Caldera being ignited by a coal seam fire, she accepts without question that she is a terrible person who does everything wrong and deserves to be punished no matter what she tries-is nightmarish, not cute. Fortunately, it looks as though we are about to launch back into plot rather than Sweetheart working through her self-loathing, so I am looking forward to next week
