Twist the bones and bend the back

Hocus Pocus is one of those movies I love so much it's hard for me to write rationally about it. I watched it as a preteen who didn't see many movies, and I thought it was the best thing ever. Recently I rewatched it with kestrell, and then again with other friends. It has held up really well ( Read more... )

"Mary and Sarah operate by going, "What's this? Can I eat it? Can I have sex with it?" and living in the moment, like puppies. Evil puppies, mind you; but they're as happy and simple-minded as Golden Retrievers."

That's an accurate description of Sarah, but *not* (IMAO) Mary. Sarah is practically solipsist, and totally I-focused. Mary, on the other hand, is perpetually aware of, and focused on, the greatest threat to her safety -- which is Winnie. She operates on the question "Will this make my sister explode in psychotic rage? And if so, will the rage be aimed at me?"

You're right, she is all of that. Mary has a horrifying relationship with Winnie, when you take a look at it.

I'm surprised at myself, that I've never noticed it consciously before. It's amazing what you can normalize.

The best part of Vincent Price's appearance on The Muppet Show, IMO, is that he and Uncle Deadly sing "You've Got A Friend"...as the stalker song that wedding DJs never seem to realize "Every Breath You Take" actually is.

Nobody can lurk and side-eye like Uncle Deadly and Vincent Price.

My favorite part was Price teaching Kermit to sprout fangs.

I, um, actually have cosplayed as Sarah. I was very young, and my best friend was obsessed with Bette Midler.

So I am delighted to hear that the movie holds up, and has not been ravaged by the Suck Fairy! I haven't seen it in years, mostly because of that fear, so yay!
