Speaking of monster hunters, I've just watched the brilliant Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon with kestrell and alexx_kay.  Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, and their ilk were all real people, and this film follows Leslie, a rising young serial killer bent on his own career.  He's a trained acrobat and sleight-of-hand artist, he does a lot of cardio so he ( Read more... )

Just watched that trailer. It has an interesting shot that wasn't in the final film: Doc Halloran being dragged off by two cops, screaming "He needs an audience!"

I liked that bit. I like to think there's a whole other (less fun) movie about Halloran becoming increasingly cheesed off with the American mental health system and becoming a lone vigilante after Reagan closed the state institutions in the eighties.

I meant to mention this during our post-film autopsy, but got distracted by all the juicy chat: did you notice that both the final girl *and* Leslie have gender-ambiguous first names? Giving the final girl a gender-ambiguous name has been a trope in many horror film/literary fiction (think of Sidney in "Scream") so I like the fact that the writers did the same thing for the monster.

I don't know anywhere near enough about slasher horror to have noticed that on my own, but now you've said it, I see it all over the place. And a meta-example, with Jamie Lee Curtis plus "Jamie" the wife of the older serial murderer in Behind the Mask.
