General Questions
What is a Big Bang Challenge?
A big bang challenge is a writing and art event where authors and artists sign up to produce fanwork for a certain fandom/genre/theme. Usually, there is a minimum word count for the writing, but that number can range anywhere from 5,000 to 50,000.
Who can sign up?
Writers of fanfiction, Artists of nearly any media type, and Betas of both fic and art.
Can I sign up for more than one role?
You can sign up for all three if you want, but make sure you can manage your time. Don’t sign up for more than one role if you believe you’ll have to drop one or two.
Does signing up commit me to finishing?
For writers, there will be a drop out post if you at any point in the bang decide you can no longer participate. Once you have submitted a rough draft, however, you cannot drop out. If you do, or if you give no warning at an earlier point of the bang, you will be asked not to sign up next year. For artists, signing up is not committing… you only commit when you claim a story.
What are the check ins?
The check ins allow the mods to see your progress. You will not be judged by how much you have completed at the time of the check ins, but you need to “check in”.
Once I've finished my fanwork, when will I be able to post it on my own lj or somewhere else?
The posting will not take place in this comm. What I mean by that is, once posting starts dates will be assigned. On those dates, authors and artists will post their art/stories on their own sites and then send the link to the mods. I will then put up a post on the comm with the fic summary along with the links to the fic and the art. However, you are not allowed to post your fic/art until that posting date that is given to you.
Can I friends!lock or make private my fic or art after posting?
No! If you do a fic or art for this bang, it must remain public. There will be a masterlist once posting finishes and readers should be able to just click and read, no friending required.
What happens if I miss a deadline?
If you miss one of the mandatory check-ins or rough draft/final due dates, then there are several things that could happen. I (or another mod) will message you, giving you three more days than the original due date. If that time passes without any word from you, you will be dropped and not allowed to enter the challenge the next round. However, if you inform me before hand that you won't be able to make a certain deadline, extensions can be made. Just let me know
How can I help out this bang?
You can advertise! Tweet, reblog on Tumblr, spread the word on your LJ… let the fandom know of our existence.
Who are the mods?
There is currently only one mod of this bang and that is Flitter. Her livejournal is flitter_and_fly.
How can I contact the bang?
PM either Flitter or email the bang email: teenwolfbb@gmail.com.
For Writers
What is the minimum word count for this challenge? Is there a maximum?
This bang has a minimum of 15,000 words. Flexibility is the key, however, if the fic comes in around 14,500 then that's fine, but 13,000 isn't. There is no maximum, only that fics must be completed by the end of the bang (that's not to say that you can't write a sequel for them, but the story must be finished in it's own right). So don't shoot for 100k if you don't think you can write that in 3 months.
This is a Teen Wolf challenge, but can I write a crossover?
Crossovers are allowed, however at least one character from Teen Wolf must be a main character of the story. Fusions, that is stories where there are different characters set in the Teen Wolf universe but no Teen Wolf character makes an appearance, are not allowed. AUs, where characters from Teen Wolf are there but set in another setting, however are allowed.
Can I write a story that I have previously posted elsewhere or is a sequel to something posted elsewhere?
You cannot write a story if it is already up somewhere else (unless you take it down from said place prior to signing up). You can, however, post a sequel. The link to the previous story will have to be clearly visible and it must be marked as a sequel.
Can I co-write a fic?
Absolutely. During sign ups, only one of you should sign up, but mention that you are co-writing and include the LJ name of the other author.
Can I write more than one fic?
Yes, go ahead, but we cannot guarantee that you’ll get an artist for both fics. We can only guarantee for the first one.
Can I use a WIP I’ve already started?
So long as it’s not posted anywhere. If it is, take it down. You should write 15,000 more than what you already have, if you have something already started, but since we can’t see into your minds to know that you already had a couple thousand words of a fic written… just be fair.
What is required for the rough draft?
Rough drafts will be due on the 5th of November. On that day, you should have at least 10k and an outline of the rest, or the full story.
What else is required for a final draft?
It must be at least 15k and I would prefer it to be betaed. Beta requesting will be put up so that you should have no trouble finding one.
Can I include the art imbedded in my fic?
That should be a discussion between you and your artist. If you want to just have a link to their art, you can, or you can use their art within your story, so long as the artist is okay with that. Make sure to discuss this issue with them before final drafts are due.
How does the final posting work?
You should host your fic on some other site (either your own LJ or somewhere else) and give the link to the mod when final drafts are due. The mod will be posting on your chosen date a post with links to both the art and the story. By that day, your fic should be unlocked for public viewing.
For Artists
What type of art is accepted for this challenge?
Anything from traditional art to graphics to manips to fanvids to fanmixes. Be creative, there really isn't much of a limit on this. A caution on fanmixes: they must include a "cd" cover -> you can't just put together a list of songs, you have to make them look good too.
What is the minimum for art?
At least one big piece. There is no maximum, if you want to send one lucky author ten banners, a video, and thirty icons, then go for it!
What constitutes as a “big piece”?
A book cover; a banner greater than 500x500px; a fanmix with album/track cover art; a fanvid of more than a minute in length; a podfic reading of the story; a sketch or painting at least as big as a normal sheet of paper.
Can I do art for more than one story?
Yes, but only after 24 hours have passed and there are still fics in need of being claimed. Then you can claim a second story.
How do I get in contact with my writer after claiming?
Both you and the writer will be emailed with each others contact information. It is then up to you and your writer how much you communicate on the art and fic.
What is due for the rough draft?
You should be about 50% done with your art, though there will be leeway on that if you contact the mod.
How does the final posting work?
You should host your art on some other site (either your own LJ or somewhere else) and give the link to the mod when final drafts are due. The mod will be posting on your chosen date a post with links to both the art and the story. By that day, your art should be unlocked for public viewing.
For Betas and Cheerleaders
What is cheerleading?
A cheerleader is a friend and a nag and a shoulder to cry on. Unlike a beta, they don't edit the story, but they do read it as the author sees fit and nudge the writer along over tough spots and cheer them on as they crest over the finish.
What is betaing?
A beta is an editor, a brainstormer, and a helping hand. Betas look over fic or art in possibly the earliest or the latest stages and give a second opinion, point out mistakes, and provide overall feedback.
What types of betaing are there?
For this challenge, we’ll be looking for fic and art betas.
How do I become a beta?
There will be a sign up that will ask your strengths and weaknesses. Writers and Artists will then have the ability to contact you (probably via email) to ask for your services.
Do I have to beta for anyone that asks?
You are not required to beta for anyone, if you don’t like their story idea or the content of their art then tell them you aren’t available. You shouldn’t be pressured into doing something that won’t also be fun for you. If at any point you realize you have too much going on, you should go and delete your original sign up comment.
Why would I beta or cheerlead for someone?
Because it’s fun, because you get to see the fic or art before anyone else, and because it’s worth it when you see the final product and know that you helped it get to that point.
